For more than 100 years, The Plaza has been a gathering place for Kings, presidents, and stars of stage and screen. Champalimaud Design redesigned the iconic suites of the Plaza hotel, updating and enhancing the most vibrant jewels of the storied hotel’s crown. The suites, 29 in all, complete with master bedroom, sitting area and master bath, have been transformed through the studio’s deft understanding of how to mingle bespoke pieces with a subtle sense of architecture to create a composition grounded in timeless design with a modern edge.

Hand-tufted rugs complement the dark floors of the space in a dramatic update to the rooms. Taking inspiration from the property’s dramatic views and proximity to Central Park, the suites are strewn with floral and botanical notes. The space hosts a variety of custom-designed furniture pieces which subtly harken to the property’s timeless charm, like carved gilded legs on the sitting rooms’ lounge chairs, and a custom-designed lighting piece sporting soft amber-hued crystals in a circular torrent. The space’s casement pieces, coffee and side tables are covered in mirrored glass, black lacquer, marble and delicate gold-leaf.

A sumptuous mixture of velvets, leathers and silks comprise the space’s textiles program, which features rich chevron patterns combined with abstracted mark-making adding to the subtle opulence of the room. The custom-designed art program showcases a mixture of New York City’s famed cultural landmarks including the ballet, contemporary abstract painting, and classical still-lives. The design tells a story that honors the longevity of the property while transforming its spaces into a fresh, modern, and inviting context.
